Twin Maples
Throwback to 2009 - The Fortnightly Club donated this truckload of lumber to Habitat for Humanity.
🏑
The lumber came from an exterior staircase that was temporarily constructed for the Twin Maples Centennial Show House in 2008. Rather than having the building materials go to waste, the ladies of The Fortnightly Club donated them to Habitat for Humanity for reuse in other construction projects.

The Fortnightly Club of Summit
125 years ago, Frances Twombly was a founding member of The Fortnightly Club of Summit.
🌷
In 1897, she organized the Club's Town Improvement Association and served as its president for 17 years. A number of T.I.A. initiatives were eventually taken over by the city, including the removal of snow, ashes and garbage.
🌷
Mrs. Twombly also served on Summit's Playground Committee, a volunteer group that preceded the Board of Recreation Commission. She became known as the "Mother of Recreation" because of the major role she played in the creation of Soldiers' Memorial Field on Ashland Road.
🌷
Always concerned about those less fortunate, Mrs. Twombly knitted an estimated 50 sweaters each year "for the overseer of the poor for distribution to needy families." Her 1942 obituary described her as one of Summit's "most valuable and loved citizens."
🌷
Thank you to Patricia E. Meola of the Summit Historical Society for the excerpt and photo.
